Joanna was a normal London girl with a normal life, until her mother was diagnosed with an acute terminal disease. Suddenly she was faced with a life full of challenges, turmoil, and a long-protracted monster of giant medical expenses. Little did she know that this was just the beginning of the troublesome life that loomed ahead.
Occupied with the responsibility of taking care of her ailing mother, she completed her college degree and started working. One day on her way from Manchester to London, she was reminded of her childhood hobby of creating stories and formed an idea to write a children’s book. This idea would change her life in ways she could not imagine.
She moved to Portugal after the heart-wrenching loss of her mother. 2 years later, she got married and had her first child. Unfortunately, her marriage did not work out and she found herself with no money raising a child on her own. This gloomy situation plunged her into a deep depression, even contemplating suicide. For years she lived on welfare to feed her daughter and felt defeated.
She completed writing her storybook, and since she could not afford to make photocopies, had to retype the manuscript over and over for each submission, only to be rejected, by not one but 12 publishers in the UK.
Even though Joanna was living in poverty, depression, and surviving rejection; one thing she did have, was her faith, patience, and perseverance.
She never gave up and eventually Bloomsbury Publishing agreed to print 1000 copies of her book about an orphan boy who attended magic school.
